Miami Heat’s Offseason Pursuits: Cain, Audige, and a Potential Dragic Reunion

August 1, 2023

The Miami Heat actively explore various avenues to strengthen their roster this offseason. While they maintain a keen interest in pursuing a trade for Damian Lillard, the Heat must also focus on other potential additions to their team.

One player on their radar is Jamal Cain, who had a promising stint with Miami last season. The 24-year-old forward showcased his skills, averaging 5.4 points and 2.9 rebounds in 18 games while shooting impressively with a .561 field goal percentage, a .350 three-point percentage, and a .773 free throw percentage. Miami made a qualifying offer of $1.8 million for a two-way contract, but Cain prefers a standard contract and is exploring opportunities with other teams. The Heat currently have 13 players on standard deals, leaving limited room for additional signings.

Another prospect that has caught Miami’s attention is Chase Audige, an undrafted free agent. Audige’s aggressive play on both ends of the court has impressed the Heat, despite some concerns about his offensive efficiency during his college career. He performed exceptionally well during summer league action, averaging 6.4 points and 1.3 three-pointers per game, shooting 47.1% from the field and 40.0% from beyond the arc.

Meanwhile, the Heat have also discussed a potential reunion with Goran Dragic’s representatives. Dragic, a 37-year-old guard, previously played for Miami and appeared in 58 games last season with Chicago and Milwaukee. However, a knee problem that required surgery may impact the negotiations, as Miami can only offer him a veteran minimum contract.

As the Heat await Portland’s decision on Damian Lillard, they actively explore these roster moves to strengthen their team for the upcoming season. Pursuing Cain, Audige, and a possible Dragic reunion adds depth and versatility to Miami’s roster, showing their commitment to competitiveness in the ever-evolving landscape of the NBA.
