Do the Spurs trade a veteran to the Heat?

May 17, 2023

The San Antonio Spurs are bound to make some changes this offseason, and the team should want as much money as possible for future draft picks.

In the trade proposed by Bleacher Report, the Spurs acquired the 18th overall pick from the Miami Heat, along with Duncan Robinson and his massive contracts along with Doug McDermott and Zach Collins.

“Buying a veteran on this roster for a pick is still the way to go, especially if San Antonio can secure a second first-round pick in the 2023 draft,” Bleacher Report wrote. “Getting the 18th pick from Miami would be a nice addition, even if it means taking Robinson in the process. For a Spurs team that doesn’t have a bad contract, they can take it easy. This deal.”

The Heat also have an incentive to make a trade to add a more reliable wing and a big man to pair with Bam Adebayo at an affordable price.

“Miami can’t be as patient as Robinson in returning to his former elite level of shooting, a skill McDermott now brings to the table,” Bleacher Report wrote. “The 31-year-old forward made 40.9 percent of his catch-and-shoot 3-pointers last season and was even better on pull-up jumpers (42.6 percent).”

Considering how close the Heat are to a title, such a move could give Miami the lead if the team doesn’t lift the Larry O’Brien trophy this year.

While the Spurs love the veteran leadership that McDermott and Collins have provided, San Antonio has the potential to build a brighter future by acquiring both players.
