The highly anticipated Fourth of July fireworks failed to materialize in the ongoing Damian Lillard trade saga. The NBA star point guard of the Portland Trail Blazers, who recently requested a trade, may have to wait longer than expected to find his desired new destination with the Miami Heat.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Trail Blazers front office is in no rush to facilitate a deal with the Heat.

“It will require patience as the marketplace develops and the Portland Trail Blazers assess the available options,” Wojnarowski stated. “There is no sense of urgency for them to engage in a trade with Miami, especially since it would necessitate the involvement of a third team to accommodate Tyler Herro. This process will take time.”

While the Miami Heat have been viewed as the frontrunners to acquire Lillard, the Trail Blazers are committed to extracting the best possible package in return for their seven-time All-Star. Earlier reports indicated that Portland is open to trade discussions with any team in the league, emphasizing that Miami won’t receive preferential treatment despite Lillard’s preference.

General Manager Joe Cronin reaffirmed the team’s commitment to winning, expressing their intent to make decisions that align with the organization’s pursuit of success. However, insiders suggest that Lillard’s strong desire to join the Heat could deter other teams from pursuing a trade, wary of dealing with a disgruntled star.

“We have consistently expressed our desire to keep Dame here, but today he informed us of his wish to move on and play elsewhere. Our unwavering commitment to winning remains unchanged, and we will make decisions that prioritize the team’s best interests in our pursuit of success.”

Reports suggest that the Miami Heat has prepared an offer centered around Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, and draft compensation. However, a third team might need to be involved to redirect Tyler Herro elsewhere. While the waiting game continues, the long trade talks have paused Miami’s other off-season plans. According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the Heat plan to hold off on additional player acquisitions until the Lillard situation is resolved.
